In many countries and cultures of the world, giant puppets are used in festivals and rituals. In Catalonia, the northeast corner of Spain, “gegants” are prevalent fixtures at any and all events. Recently, a friend was at a festa in the Raval not far from Palau Güell when, lo and behold, there was a ‘gegant’ of Gaudí 3 meters tall. ‘He’ was from Riudoms, a town 5 kilometers from Reus. It has been a matter of dispute between these two towns as to where Sr. Gaudí was actually born. As if to trump the argument, the Colla Gegantera de Riudoms have their very own.
